Alongside the A75 a few miles south of Creetown this castle dates back to 1528 and is now an L-shaped building derived from the original rectangle.

As well as the castle there's a café (Oakhill) and deli and a few holiday chalets (are they still called that?) down by the shore.

There's not much information about early ownership but there are dark mutterings of murdered neighbours around 1769. Pretty much standard fare for those times. The owners were a Catholic family often suspected of sheltering Jesuit priests and were banished to France during the Protestant Reformation.

Although lacking a roof (you can see the walkways inside) it's now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland and open to the public. There's plenty of car parking space.
