The David Livingston Centre in Blantyre celebrates the life and work of the Scottish explorer and
Christian missionary, born here in a cotton mill tenement on the banks of the River Clyde in 1813.
After studying medicine he set of to Africa to try to end the East African Slave Trade. He's still held in esteem by the people of Malawi and Zambia but is more generally known as the man who died (in 1873) trying to find the true source of the River Nile.
His reports from Africa helped to convince the people of Britain, and Europe in general, that the southern part of Africa was rich in resources and ripe for colonisation and profits.
These are no more than a few brief highlights and the museum here in Blantyre tells the full story in more detail.
Access to the park is free and there's a charge for the museum and birthplace entry. As per usual there's a gift shop and café. Plenty of free parking and a station neraby.
At the top of the final photo you can see the adjacent David Livingston Bridge, shown in close-up on the page linked to below.
