Culzean Castle, the Robert Adam masterpiece ten miles to the south of Ayr

Perched on a cliff-top high above the sea in the south of Ayrshire not far north
of Turnberry and Maidens.
The interior by Robert Adam is stunning and the entire park in which the castle sits is an excellent place for a day out both for those interested in history and those with families and young children.
One interesting feature is the round towers at the corners and along the back of the castle. These contain the spiral staircases that the servants and maids would use to access the public rooms and bedrooms. You wouldn't want the residents and guests to actually see the people caring for them.
In the first photo you can easily see Maidens and the Turnberry lighthouse to the south and the island i n two of the photos is Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde off Girvan.
Two of the later photos show the old stable block now converted into the obligatory café, gift shop and a specialist second-hand bookshop. There's a busload of schoolchildren unloading in the background.
These photos, taken on a late spring morning before the park and castle opened, only show a small part of the buildings and attractions on offer.
The castle is owned and run by the National Trust for Scotland. It is rightly one of the top tourist attractions in Scotland.
