Dumfries Museum is on a hill a quarter mile south of the River Nith.

A camera obscura? An optical device similar to a telescope which projects an image from the lens at the top down onto a curved table inside. Open to the public from April to September.

This was built in 1836 on top of an old windmill and is the oldest operating camera obscura in the world.

From this point you can see most of Dumfries which was pretty impressive when this was built in 1836.

Live moving pictures in colour about twenty years before even black and white still photography was commonly available.
