Sir Harry Lauder was the first knight of the British theatre.

While living here from 1908 Sir Harry also bought an estate at Glenbranter, a few miles north. It was there that he and his wife erected a memorial to their son Captain John Lauder, who died in France in 1916.

The plan was for Glenbranter to be the home of his son and his future wife but sadly it was not to be.

These two photos show in red the area where the house, Laudervale, once stood. That name is still used for the road leading up the hill. Dunoon is only a mile or so to the north. The house here at Bullwood burned down a few years after Sir Harry sold it.

Later, after his wife died, he retired to an impressive house in Strathaven, Lauder Ha'.
