Eaglesham was designed in the shape of a letter “A”, supposedly based on the initials
of Alexander Montgomerie and his wife, Ann Polnoon and was built around the 1750s.
The shape of the A is apparent in the first photo except that Mid Road, across the central space - The Orry - is mostly hidden by trees.
On the horizon above the village is an edge of Whitelee wind farm, still said to be the largest in Europe.
This was built as a model village with the help and advice of David Dale who later built New Lanark, now a World Heritage Site. Eaglesham was a test-bed for that venture.
In the centre of the Orry was a water-powered cotton mill, fed by a mill-pond and lade and at the bottom right (to the side of the pub) was a corn mill which re-used the water lower down the hill.
Eaglesham is eight miles south of Glasgow city centre and is getting closer to East Kilbride every year.
