This monument was built to commemorate the life of Robert Burns who lived and worked in the town and on East Mossgiel farm, nearby.

That's the A76 alongside the monument - the main trunk road from Kilmarnock to Dumfries.

Kilmarnock can be seen in the top left of the first image and the road to the left passes the farm that Burns lived at - East Mossgiel - and leads to Tarbolton.
