These stones are on a small hill in the extreme east of Eglinton Country Park and
are a few yards from the Cairnmount roundabout on the A736.
Despite appearances these are not ancient stones* nor have they any social or religious significance. The stones were left over from a local open-cast mine and someone had the idea of placing them on a hilltop, that being a good way to dispose of them.
*OK, all stones are ancient, but they're not man-made or shaped or placed in nay pattern.
The painting on the stones is pretty much as expected these days but as they're not a protected monument there's no major crime.
The benches are for people to enjoy the view but as the tress around the site grow that tends to be reducing year by year. The path by the stones is part of a well-maintained system to allow access to all parts of the park.
There's no nearby parking or other facilities. The park centre is about a mile and a half away.
